Serigrafia „Bez tytułu”, z serii Drwal, Krzysztofa Maniaka
Wokół kolumny sosen i świerków.

Symbolizuje romantyczny topos jednostki, człowieka zafascynowanego bezmiarem i potęgą natury. Bez patosu i rozmachu.

🇬🇧 English version
"Untitled" silkscreen from the Lumberjack series by Krzysztof Maniak.
– A man is sitting on the stump of a felled tree, with his back to the viewer. His knees are pulled up, his feet rest on the edge, and his back is slightly hunched. Krzysztof Maniak—since this is a self-portrait of his—is looking deep into the forest at something we cannot see. Around him are columns of pines and spruces. On the ground are broken branches and tree-stump remnants—the wreckage of a clear-cut. The stump he is sitting on is nearly a meter in diameter. The artist fits on it effortlessly; in this juxtaposition, he is as small as a child next to an adult. This means the tree could have been several hundred years old when it was cut down. The drawing was created in 2025 and executed in pencil on paper at a 1:1 scale; it has a height of 225 cm and a width of 150.5 cm. It is a record of a specific action, but also of an attitude central to Maniak's entire body of work, consisting of a consistent coexistence with nature. In whatever form it functions around us: backyard brush, monocultural forest plantations, post-agricultural fallow land, and everything in between. – an excerpt from a text by Przemysław Jędrowski for the book "MANIAK Z NATURY", Mono Duo Tri Publishing House, Poznań 2026.
A few more words from Jędrowski – Rückenfigur is a compositional device depicting a figure with their back to the viewer, observing the horizon. It symbolizes the romantic topos of the individual, a human fascinated by the immensity and power of nature. Here, nature is a separate, formidable, and mysterious world. This is how Caspar David Friedrich painted his figures. On rocks, cliffs, and peaks, above a sea of mist. For him, nature was a fascinating spectacle, man a spectator, and the boundary between them as sharp as the edge of a precipice. Maniak deconstructs this gesture. Instead of homo viator, the universal pilgrim searching for meaning in nature, he draws an intimate self-portrait. He sits low, close to the ground, on a tree stump in a post-logging forest. Without pathos or grand scale.
Krzysztof Maniak (born 1990) – his artistic practice is based on actions within the landscape. His works are most often discrete, simple gestures and interactions with nature, such as petting moss, tree bark, or snow, climbing trees, and searching for the distance between two trees that corresponds to the length of his body. The artist creates during his walks through the forests, meadows, and hills in Tuchów, where he lives. These places serve both as a backdrop for his actions, a material for temporary installations, and a source of props used in performances. A graduate of the Faculty of Intermedia at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, since defending his doctorate in 2018 he has been associated with the Department of Intermedia Art Phenomena at the same university. Winner of, among others, the 14th edition of the Artistic Journey of Hestia competition, the Grand Prix of the 5th Spring Salon organized by BWA in Tarnów, and the 10th edition of "Views" (Spojrzenia), a competition organized by Zachęta – National Gallery of Art.
